Baby Israel was born on October 7, 2021. Just four days later, Dr. David Paez from The Dominican Cuban Medical Center in Santo Domingo delivered the heartbreaking news: Israel was born with an intestinal obstruction and urgently needed surgery. Miguel and Corpy, Israel’s parents, run a small restaurant in Arroyo Baril, Samana, which is a daunting two-and-a-half-hour journey from Santo Domingo. The first surgery drained their savings instantly, leaving them in a dire financial situation. Dr. David informed them that Israel would need additional intestinal surgery.
Thankfully, the Samana Smiles Foundation and its compassionate supporters intervened upon learning about baby Israel’s needs.
In October 2023, Israel underwent his second surgery, which cost 300,000 Pesos or $5,357.00 US dollars, fully covered by the Samana Smiles Foundation. The surgery lasted four and a half hours, and Israel spent a week in the hospital.
Despite the challenges, Israel is thriving, as evidenced by his joyful photos. He plays, runs around, and laughs like any other little boy, a true testament to his resilience. However, the journey is far from over, and the financial burden continues to mount. Every other Saturday, Miguel and Corpy travel to Santo Domingo to have Israel’s colon rehydrated, a visit that costs $175.00 each time. Additionally, the Samana Smiles Foundation continues to provide assistance to ensure Israel’s nutritional needs are met.
A third surgery is scheduled for April 2024, although the cost remains uncertain. Updates will be provided here or on the Samana Smiles website. Israel is surrounded by love from his family, his doctor, and the Samana Smiles Foundation. Without the support of the foundation, Israel’s story could have had a very different outcome. Join us in shaping Israel’s future and being part of his remarkable journey.
